re:Work for Mac
SetupAbout a minute, once
Move re:Work to Applications and open it
Setup runs in its own window. There is no account to create and nothing to sign in to.
Turn on activity recording
Choose Enable activity recording and macOS will ask you to allow Accessibility, the same channel assistive tools use. re:Work uses it to read the title, open document, and web address of the window in front. Nothing is recorded until you choose this, and you can say Not now.
Find it in your menu bar
re:Work normally has no Dock icon. Click its menu bar icon for the Today panel; right-click for History, Settings, Pause Recording, and Quit. Open History from anywhere with ⌘ ⇧ H.
Start at login, if you like
Let re:Work open quietly with your Mac so your timeline has no gaps. You can change this any time in Settings → Recording.
After that, it won’t ask you for anything else.
QuestionsBefore you install
- Does re:Work see my screen or what I type?
- No. It never takes screenshots, records the screen, reads page or document contents, or sees keystrokes. It counts key presses using the system’s own counter, without knowing which keys. The privacy page lists everything it reads.
- Where does my data go?
- Nowhere. It stays in one local database on your Mac. There is no account and no cloud sync, and nothing about your activity is ever sent anywhere.
- Why isn’t it in the Mac App Store?
- Mac App Store apps are sandboxed, and macOS never offers a sandboxed app the Accessibility permission re:Work needs to read window titles.
- Can I stop it from recording something?
- Yes. Pause from the menu bar icon at any time; the gap is marked as paused. Add any app under Settings → Privacy and it is not read, recorded, or counted from that moment on.
- Do I need to connect my calendar?
- No. Calendar, Notifications, and Contacts are optional and only ask when you turn on the feature that uses them. Without Calendar, meetings are still detected from Zoom, Teams, Webex, and Google Meet; Plan needs it.
- How do I delete my history?
- Settings → Data lets you keep history forever or for 30, 90, or 365 days, and Clear all data permanently deletes every recorded day from your Mac.
